The Prevention and Treatment of High Cholesterol

In medical circles high cholesterol is considered to be a fasting blood cholesterol level that is higher than 5.2 mmol/L (200 mg/dL). More ideally, individuals should strive to achieve a fasting blood cholesterol level that is below 3.9 mmol/L (150 mg/dL). High cholesterol can result from genetic (often a decreased ability to clear cholesterol from the blood) or dietary factors, or a combination of the two. In any case it is advisable to reduce your intake of foods high in saturated fat and/or cholesterol. It is also advisable to increase foods rich in soluble dietary fiber, which act as cholesterol magnets, lowering cholesterol by dragging it out of the body with each bowel movement.
